Camp Kern Through the Years: A Timeline of Growth

Since 1910, Camp Kern has been a place where kids discover adventure, friendship, and purpose in the great outdoors. What started as a simple dream to get youth into nature has become one of the most beloved YMCA camps in the country.

Carl B Kern

1910–1917: From Dream to Dedication

  • 1910: Carl B. Kern joins the Dayton YMCA with a mission to bring kids into nature.

  • 1911: Carl Kern and Christ F. Kunz lead 28 boys on a 3-day camping trip near Fort Ancient.

  • 1913: The YMCA purchases 68 acres along the Little Miami River, giving Camp Ozone a permanent home.

1920s–1940s: Building Tradition One Cabin at a Time

  • 1923: Permanent lodges and cabins are added to accommodate growing camper interest.

  • 1943: Due to increased demand, Camp Kern begins transitioning to a new hilltop location for expanded space and accessibility.

1947–1969: Structures That Shaped a Generation

  • 1947: First pool and bathhouse built.

  • 1954: Pete’s Tower constructed. (Photo above or to the right)

  • 1965: Ranch Camp established to offer immersive equestrian and nature programming.

  • 1969: ELK Lodge (named for Edward L. Kohnle) completed.

1970s–1980s: Thriving Through Innovation

  • 1971: A new bathhouse and pool are built to support larger co-ed sessions.

  • 1977: Camp Kern hosts its first co-ed summer sessions.

  • 1980s: Significant upgrades: new riding arena, boathouse, expanded cabins, and updated ELK Lodge—supporting year-round programming.

1990–2000s: A Camp for All Seasons

  • 1992: Cross Keys Tavern restored, preserving historic camp character.

  • 1996: Brisben Family Center opens to expand year-round lodging.

  • Early 2000s: New additions include the Indoor Climbing Center, Kent Barnheiser Bathhouse, Tango Tower, and Schiewetz Assembly Hall.

2009–2010s: Adventure Takes Flight

  • 2009: Ozone Zipline Adventures launches—the YMCA's first educational canopy tour experience, blending fun with environmental learning. Additionally, the Casper Lodges and Yurt Village were added, bringing a rustic charm to overnight stays

Today: Carrying the Legacy Forward

Camp Kern continues to grow, offering unforgettable experiences for campers, families, and schools. With every program, cabin, and zipline ride, Camp Kern connects youth with nature, confidence, and community.
