Summer Camp Counselors – FAQs

Not at all! If you enjoy working with kids, we’ll train you with everything you need before camp begins.
Absolutely. We’ll work with your school or advisor to make your time at Camp Kern internship-approved—regardless of your major.
You’ll get to guide campers through climbing, archery, canoeing, horseback riding, drama, sports, and more. We’ll train you in your selected activities.
Kids ages 5–17 from all over the country—and sometimes the world! You’ll get experience working with different age groups throughout the summer.
Yes! You’ll earn a salary plus free housing and meals. Weeks run from Sunday to Friday.
Yes. You’ll get daily breaks and Fridays off through Sunday morning. We'll also work with you on scheduling conflicts if needed.
Most counselors live in air-conditioned cabins with campers and a co-counselor. Other staff stay in dedicated staff housing. Everyone gets a bed!
Yes! You’ll eat camp meals with campers. We accommodate dietary needs, including vegetarian and allergy-safe meals.
Only on designated days (like check-in). We provide a staff shirt and name tag for those. Otherwise, dress appropriately for camp activities.
We ask everyone—including staff—to disconnect from screens while at camp. Devices are stored in staff-only areas and used only on breaks.
Camp Kern is a drug-, alcohol-, and tobacco-free workplace. Violating this policy will result in dismissal.
